Season 12: All the New Items

Season 11 has ended with a bang, and Riot has added a few new items to the game. In this Mobalytics article, we will break down the new items they’ve added and give you a few examples of champions who could work well with them.

Before we begin, these items were added on patch 11.23. Suppose you want to check the patch notes out yourself; head over to the official patch notes. If you’re not interested in reading everything, we broke down the patch changes in our Mobalytics patch notes.

If you’re looking to up your game or want to improve at League of Legends, sign up to Mobalytics for more tips to improve your climb!

Season 12: All the New Items

  1. Mage Items
  2. Tank Items
  3. Assassin Items

Mage items

Crown of the Shattered Queen

Crown of the Shattered Queen

Crown of the Shattered Queen is an item that is great against assassins or champions with strong all-in. It offers you extra survivability that reduces incoming damage by 75%. This item is a Mythic item and offers AP, health, mana, haste and is built from Lost Chapter, Kinglegem, Amp Tome and 265 gold.

This can be a good item on Twisted Fate, Syndra or Lissandra.

Opinion on this item: This is a very situational item. It gives good stats, but you will only be buying it when the enemy has tons of burst damage. I think that you wouldn’t ultimately pick this item unless the situation calls for it.

Shadowflame

Shadowflame

Shadowflame is an offensive item for Mages. This item costs 3000 gold, is built from Hextech Alternator, Needlessly LargeRod and 700 gold. It gives a lot of AP and some health. It is good as it provides magic pen which is based on the enemies current health. It is good against champions with shields.

This can be a good item on Syndra, Leblanc or Evelynn.

Opinion on this item: Let’s face it, there are tons of shielding champions in League right now. This will help you counter them and make you stronger versus them. I think this is an excellent new item.

Tank items

Evenshroud

Evenshroud

Evenshroud is an item that is going to be good on tanks. This item will be good on tanky Supports who need to get kills early. Previously, the only viable item was Locket, which was a defensive tool, but this one will help you get kills.

Evershroud is built from Kinglegem, Aegis of the Legion and 300 gold. It gives 200 health, ability haste, armour and magic resistance. It offers decent stats for its cost. However, what you’re buying it for is the extra damage the target will take when you CC them. When you CC a target, they will take more damage for 5 seconds.

This item can be good on any tank Support like Leona, Rell or Nautilus.

Opinion on this item: I think this is a good item for tanks as it offers them a much more effective laning phase. Locket was suitable but didn’t offer much in terms of aggression. This item does, so I like it.

Winter’s Approach

Winter’s Approach

This item can be upgraded as it is built from Tear, Kindlegem, Ruby Crystal, and 1000 gold. It costs 2600 gold and is an item that tanks will buy if they rely heavily on mana and their abilities.

It gives 400 health, 500 mana when upgraded. 15 ability haste, and you gain bonus health which relies on your mana bar.

This item can be good on champions like Maokai, Malphite or Singed.

Opinion on this item: I think it’s an interesting item. I think it will help some champions like Singed as they rely heavily on mana.

Assassin Items

Axiom Arc

Axiom Arc

Axiom Arc is an assassin item that gives ability haste. This item costs 3k gold, is built from Serrated Dirk, Caulfield’s Warhammer and 800 gold. It provides a lot of AD, haste and lethality.

The Passive of this item refunds your Ultimates cooldown too, which is nice.

This item can be good on champions like Zed, Qiyana and Talon.

Opinion on this item: There weren’t many options in terms of ability haste for Assassins. This item will fill the gap for those who like to play assassin champions in League.

Summary

That’s about it for all the new items in League of Legends. I would highly advise you to check out the official patch notes or the Mobalytics patch notes to see what other items were changed for Season 12.

Preseason 2022 League of Legends News

The Preseason 2022 video has been released this week with Riot outlining information and news with things we should expect in the very near future. In this Mobalytics article, we will break down everything Riot announced in their latest video and give our initial thoughts and reactions to everything discussed in the video.

  1. Review of Previous Champion Releases
  2. Champion Clarity
  3. Class Diversity
  4. Items
  5. Runes
  6. New Bounty System
  7. Dragons
  8. Challenges
  9. Game modes

For more League of Legends news, tips and tricks to up your game, or find the latest builds for your favourite champion, sign up to Mobalytics for more!

If you want to check the video out for yourselves, here it is!

1. Review of Previous Champion Releases

Riot has launched several champions this season and reworked some too. Champions such as Dr Mundo, Samira and Vex were all released or reworked this year. Riot stated, remarkably, that they know that they launched champions whose kits were busted and overturned, in particular, they noted Dr Mundo’s dominance after his rework.

I think we can praise Riot for actually taking a stance and admitting that some champions were not exactly balanced at the start.

Ashe Zombie Pre-season

2. Champion Clarity

Champions with complex kits are something Riot makes frequently, however, they occasionally make champions with varying complexity. Something they have always struggled with is clarity and how to play said champions.

Riot’s noted that you shouldn’t really be using the wiki to learn how to play a champion, so it looks like they might start to introduce their own version, or they will make efforts to make it easier to understand a champion’s abilities, how to play them, and how to play against them.

Aphelios_NightbringerSkin

yeah but how do you play this champ btw?

3. Class Diversity

Riot has made huge changes this season that has allowed champions to switch roles and heavily increased the popularity of some champions. For instance, Brand, Morgana and Lee Sin are champions who have seen plays in alternative roles thanks to changes that Riot directly or indirectly made to them.

Riot’s noted that these changes were due to buffs, nerfs and changes to itemisation.

Lee Sin base splash crop

4. Items

2 new Mythic items are coming in the Preseason:

  • The first is a tank Support item. It is for champions who like to hard engage, so it sounds like it’ll be good on Leona and Nautilus. It will be good on champions with CC as it increases the damage output from your allies after you CC someone.
  • The second Mythic item is for mages. It reduces enemy damage after you’ve been hit. This will be great on mages when laning against assassins or anyone with lots of burst.

There will be 3 new Legendary items in the Preseason:

  • A new ability haste Legendary item will be added for assassins this season too. It offers ability haste and reduces their Ultimate’s cooldown on takedowns.
  • For tanks, a new Legendary item that grants bonus health that synergises with the amount of mana you have.
  • Finally, mages will have a new Legendary item that offers pen and will be good against champions with shields.

5. Runes

Glacial Augment will be getting changed to enhance its slow.

Lethal Tempo will also be getting adjusted to make it more impactful for the champions who can use it.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to talk about with Runes as Riot didn’t go into too much detail. We will see what happens when the changes hit the PBE soon.

6. New Bounty System

There will be an introduction of a secondary bounty system to work in conjunction with kills. This bounty system works with objectives such as the Baron and Towers. This sounds pretty good on paper, but we will wait to see how strong this change is. We shall see how Riot does it, but I am fearful that this change may be super OP.

Baron Pre-season

This new system is intended to help teams get back into the game after a rough start. In conjunction with player bounties, objectives and towers will be worth more gold and given to the whole team once destroyed.

7. Dragons

2 more Dragons are flying into Summoners Rift. The first Dragon is the Hextech Dragon which gives all allies ability haste and attack speed. The Soul Dragon gives a chain slow which Riot has noted acts similar to Statikk Shiv. Gates will also be introduced with this Dragon, which basically allows you to move across the map via a portal.

Hextech Drake

The second Dragon is the Chemtech Drake. This Dragon allows you to deal more damage while you’re on low health. The Soul Dragon allows you to have a second chance of life by putting you in a zombie state after dying to potentially get a kill in return. Camouflaged areas of the map will appear once the Dragon has been slain, so look out for hiding enemies!

Chemtech Drake

8. Challenges

There are new challenges coming to League of Legends. Riot discussed things such as roles, game modes, mastery and more. There’s not a lot to talk about for challenges, but hopefully, they will be optional.

9. Game modes

Finally, let’s go over Riot’s game modes. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we will be seeing any old game modes returning any time soon (like Star Guardian or Ascension) because they’re hard to maintain and update. However, Ultimate SpellBook will be returning soon.

Conclusion

New items and new Dragons coming to the game will bring a fresh new feel to League of Legends. Among some of the buffs and nerfs they will make in the future, the new season looks to be quite promising.

In particular, I’m looking forward to the challenges in conjunction with the Mobalytics challenges. What are your thoughts on Riot’s video and what they have planned for next year? Let us know!

ARAM Balance Changes and Other Major Differences from Summoner’s Rift

Did you know that are a ton of differences between ARAM and Summoners Rift? Apart from the super obvious map changes, there are a lot of additional changes to the game mode ranging from items, runes and champion nerfs or buffs.

Did you even know that runes and champions have different numbers in ARAM? Probably not unless you play a lot of ARAM!

In this guide, we’ll be covering all of these changes so be sure to bookmark it as a reference!

If you’re tired of having to manually look up and adjust your runes after every dodge in ARAM, why not try out the Mobalytics App?

It will now import the latest and best ARAM builds for the champion you’re playing with just one click.

All Major ARAM Differences on Summoners Rift

Before we begin, I would like to throw out a general disclaimer. Some of the screenshots or graphics we use in this guide may look incorrect. Riot isn’t always consistent with updating the numbers or the UI in the client when it comes to ARAM. So some of the numbers may look slightly off.

ARAM vs Summoners Rift

Unlike Summoner’s Rift, the original LoL game mode, ARAM (“All Random All Mid”) is a simplified alternate game mode that only features one lane.

Everyone gets a random champion (from the champion’s the own plus the free rotation) and play 5v5. There is no bottom lane, no jungle- nothing. Everyone runs it down mid!

Usually, it’s a “for fun” game mode since there isn’t a ranked mode for ARAM and nobody really tries too hard, but you’ll often find some very tryhard players!

To some extent, there is a strategy to ARAM, and while this guide will not break down strong strats to help you win the game, we will go over some major differences between the two game modes that may alter who or how you play the game.

ARAM General Champion Changes

There are a lot of different changes to basically every champion in ARAM. I will break them down shortly, but here are some general, mass changes that affect a ton of different champions.

    • Every champion starts at level 3. This allows you to put points in any or all your basic abilities.
    • After 18 in-game minutes, champions deal bonus damage to structures.
    • Damage from champions at a 1000 range is reduced by 15% (excluding Ultimates and DoT abilities).
    • All champions get +70 summoner spell haste.
    • Each champion restores 0.15% of their maximum mana per second.
    • All outgoing heals are reduced by 50%.
    • Melee champions gain 10 bonus magic resistance.

Conclusion

That about rounds up all the major differences between Summoners Rift and ARAM. Are you surprised about how many major differences there are between SR and Howling Abyss?

As you can see, there are a lot of changes that make theoretically strong ARAM champions really weak.

How to Research League of Legends Builds

When it comes to climbing in League of Legends, you must give yourself the best chance of winning the game before actually getting into the game itself. One way you can do this is by ensuring you have the best possible Runes, Summoner Spells and item build in mind.

In this Mobalytics guide, we will discuss how you can research item builds for your favorite champion and how to find the best build for them.

Rell 11.7 Builds

The topics we’ll be covering:

  • What is a build?
  • Why researching builds is important
  • How to research builds
  • How to learn from pro builds
  • Recognizing different options for different champions
  • Situational items

What is a build?

Firstly, we need to understand what is meant by the term “build”. Traditionally, a build refers to the items your champion buys throughout the game and the order in which you buy them.. These include Starting items such a Doran’s Blade, Epic items like Bami’s Cinder, or Mythic items like Moonstone Renewer.

However, it’s not just the items you buy that make up a build. It’s also the runes and Summoner Spells that make up a build. Runes like Guardian and Summoner Spells like Flash or Heal are also factors for building your champion. Some champions can take different runes and Summoner Spells depending on your playstyle or the matchup.

While you cannot change your choice of Summoner Spells or runes in-game like you can with your itemization (unless you’ve taken Spellbook/Omnistone), taking the best runes and Summoners for your champion will help you win the game.

Why researching builds is important

Having an optimal setup will increase your chances of winning games as you will be building items or taking resources into the game that empower and synergize with your champions kit.

If you take things that don’t offer you the best chances of winning the game, you’re going to struggle from the get-go. For example, taking incorrect runes can make all the difference during the laning phase.

Also, if you’re buying the wrong items, you may be doing more harm than good and for instance, buying items that are not needed until the late game will not help you during the laning phase. Rabadon’s Deathcap isn’t a good first item!

How to research builds

There are many different ways you can do your research to find the best build for your champion. Honestly, there are many websites and resources that provide builds for every champion in the game. But, you need to be careful about blindly copying every site, make sure that your source is trustworthy.

Kai'Sa champion build page

Starting off, you’re on the Mobalytics blog so we’ll naturally begin with our own tool recommendations!

  • Head to our Champion Pages to find builds for every champion, based on stats such as popularity and win rate.
  • If you have the Mobalytics Desktop App, you can get the builds from the Champion Pages auto-imported every game so you never have to worry about taking the wrong runes.
  • By using our Pro Builds section within the Champion Pages, you can find builds used by pro players and one-trick ponies. This can be a good way to find builds before they become popular.

Other tools:

  • Check out guides that are made from high ELO one tricks rather than the guides created by lower-level players in places like Mobafire.
  • Look for Youtube guides of your favorite champion, but they can be hit or miss. Watch out for clickbait builds that are meant for entertainment.
  • Sites like Lolalytics can be useful but the site isn’t exactly friendly to new players and is better for more experienced players.

How to learn from pro builds

Checking out what pro players are building for your main champions is also a good idea. Learning from the pros is a great way of improving as a whole, so it makes sense to copy their builds too.

Head over to Mobalytics new pro builds section of your favorite champion and see what pros are building for that champion. If we head over to the Kai’Sa pro build page, we can see what matchup they were in, and what runes, Summoner Spells, and items they were taking too.

Carzzy Kai'Sa pro build

If we click on a build, we can also see the breakdown of what items they brought during the game and when. This can be helpful if you’re not sure when you should buy certain items and in what order.

Finally, we can also see the skill order they took in this game. Now, for the most part, champions don’t take different skill orders, but in certain matchups, you may wish to.

For these particular cases, try out the matchup search feature to see how top players handle different matchups.

Kai'sa probuild search feature

Recognize different choices for different champions

Some champions have multiple rune setups and different builds. For example, Janna can take either Arcane Comet, Guardian, or Summon Aery.

In these cases, it’s good to understand the matchup and what to expect from it and take the most appropriate rune set up according to the matchup you’re in. For example, if you’re against a Leona as Janna, you could take the Guardian keystone rather than Arcane Comet which would be more of an offensive option while Aery provides a middle ground option that gives a bit of offense and defense.

To understand what the best rune or build set up is when you have many options, ask yourself a few questions. “What does the enemy laner want to do?”,  “Am I able to utilize this keystone?”,  “Will we win this matchup if I take this keystone?” Once you’ve asked those questions, you should try to take the rune that answers most of those questions.

It’s okay though, you will need to experiment with each build setup to know what to take in the future. So don’t worry if you make a mistake and take a non-optimal setup at first, just remember for next time! Like we said before though, you could just take a standard setup and do perfectly fine against the enemy if you don’t wish to customize your runes.

Situational items

Situational items are very impactful in League of Legends. Every champion has a traditional build or set of builds that they can go, but sometimes you need to go against what websites or creators suggest to increase your chances of winning the game.

In the current state of League of Legends, there are tons of healing across the map. If the enemy team has a lot of healing, you need to buy items that will increase your chances of killing them which can be done by purchasing items that apply grievous wounds to cut down on their healing.

Items such as Oblivion Orb or Executioner’s Calling will make dealing with the enemy team easier as they will not get as much healing back in fights. For example, you need to rush Executioner’s Calling against a Senna + Soraka lane in the bottom lane if you want to get kills. If you don’t get this item, then you’ll never be able to kill them.

Executioner's Calling

If you want to know what items are classed as situational items and when you should adjust your build path to accommodate these items, check out our item guides for Season 11.

On the Mobalytics site, you can also see what situational items are suitable for each champion and which will help you if you need to adapt your build path against the enemy.

Things most champions can adapt to:

  • Healing reduction (Oblivion Orb/Executioner’s Calling).
  • Starting items (Relic Shield/Spelltheif’s Edge).
  • Boots (Plated Steelcaps/Mercury Treads).
  • Defensive items (Guardian’s Angel/Zhonya’s Hourglass).

Conclusion

Taking good runes, Summoner Spells, and building items that benefit your champion will increase your chances of winning the game. Make sure you take and build things that help your champion and increase your chances of winning the game.

A Beginner’s Guide to Support Items

In a game with over 200 different items and an ever-growing roster of champions, itemization is one of the more challenging aspects to learn as a beginner. At the start, knowing what League of Legends items to buy, and when to buy them is where many players fall flat.

In this beginners guide by PicklePants, we will go over every Support item in the game to help you understand when you should and shouldn’t buy them.

Because there are 3 main Support playstyles, we will discuss what items are viable for each of the utility, tank and mage Supports, while providing a few examples along the way.

The Basics

Before we move on, it’s important to discuss the terminology and provide a little background information. When you first start playing League of Legends, you won’t understand what every item does. This is natural for any game, as nobody expects you to know the ins and outs before playing.

Many players copy the same build path over and over again, and never change their item order. On the other hand, some players don’t buy items, or buy items that are not going to benefit their champion such as AP items on an AD reliant champion. This is where our Mobalytics guide will come in handy. By knowing when to buy each item, you will have an advantage over the enemy who hasn’t fully grasped the concept yet.

Items fall into one of two categories within a build:

Core:
Core items are almost always brought on your champion and syngerize really well with your champ’s kit and what they want to do. As an example, Boots will nearly always be a core item and it’s an expected inclusion.

Situational:
Situational items are not necessarily purchased every game, apart from when you need them. More often than not, situational items will be reactive to what the enemy has. For example, if the enemy has lots of AP damage, you should buy magic resist.

Essentially, every Support item will fall in one of these categories depending on the champion you’re playing.

Support Pre Game Builds

If you stumbled upon this article in search of how to build your Support champ, you’re in luck. Our free Pre Game tool gives you a build curated by our high-ELO experts right before your match begins.

Janna pre-game items

This is Janna’s build, skill order and rune setup. Find more information about Janna or any champion’s build by checking out our champion pages.

If you’d like to try the Pre Game, just click here to sign up for an account! It’s quick and easy, and there are a ton of other useful tools within the Pre Game feature itself and the rest of our platform. Now, on to the rest of our adventure through Support items.

Starting Items for Supports

Support Starting Items

From left to right: Spelltheif’s Edge, Spectral Sickle, Steel Shoulderguards, Relic Shield.

There are 4 starting options for the Support, and each is designed to be taken by specific champion archetypes that can benefit from it. Each of the items provides gold income and allow you to eventually gain wards via completing a quest.

Spellthief’s Edge

Spellthief's Edge

Spellthief’s Edge is an item that is taken on AP Supports or champions who can deal damage. It provides AP, health, mana regeneartion and gold.

If you’re in a matchup you can play aggressively and poke, Spellthief is your item.

It is the most challenging and difficult Support item to stack as it relies on the player to be proactive in lane. For example, making sure to consume all of it stacks whenever possible and minimizing the downtime between gaining stacks.

You can have a maximum of 3 stacks which can be consumed by dealing damage through auto attacks, abilities or hitting a tower. Make sure to consume them as often as possible.

Examples of champions who benefit: Janna, Zyra, Brand.

Steel Shoulderguards

Steel Shoulderguards

This item should be purchased on champions that will be building tank as it provides health, health regeneration, gold and attack damage. It is very similar to Relic Shield except it gives AD not AP.

If you have available stacks, you should auto attack and last hit the minion. The priority goes as follows: cannon minion, melee minion then ranged minion. I would prioritize the first two and never last hit a ranged minion with this item as it gives little to no gold for your quest.

Examples of champions who benefit: Braum, Thresh, Pyke

Relic Shield

Relic Shield

The next Support item is the Relic Shield. This is an item that is purchased on champions that will be building primarily tank, or who are tanky in general as it provides health, health regeneration, AP and a little bit of sustain.

The quest for this item requires the user to earn 500 gold through last hitting minions (you share gold with your laner). You will find that there are orbs that float around your champion to tell you how many minions or stacks you can take. You can also check how many you have available to you by looking just above your ability bar.

If you have available stacks, you should auto attack and last hit the minion. The priority goes as follows: cannon minion, melee minion then ranged minion. I would prioritize the first two and never last hit a ranged minion with this item as it gives little to no gold for your quest.

Examples of champions who benefit: Janna, Alistar, Nautilus.

Spectral Sickle

Spectal Sickle s10The final Support item provides AD, health, mana regeneration and gold. It is usually taken on AD Supports who like to trade often and deal damage.

This item is basically an AD version of Spelltheif’s Edge. You should look to harass and auto-attack the enemy whenever you have 3 available stacks on this item to make the most of its gold income and to complete your warding quest quickly.

Examples of champions who benefit: Senna, Ashe, Pyke.

Multiple options

You may have noticed we used Janna as an example twice when suggesting who benefits from an item. Janna is a prime example of a champion that works with multiple starting items. This is just one example of a champion who can take more than one starting item.

Since you’re limited to one, you will need to pick the item that is going to help you the most during the laning phase. For example, if you’re in a good matchup and able to trade frequently, take Spellthief’s Edge. If you’re in a poor matchup where you’re unable to hit the enemy, take something different.

Complete (finished) items for Support

Completed items are items that no longer need upgrading and have reached their final form. They cost quite a bit but are cheaper for Supports compared to any other role. Because we can’t cover every champion or playstyle, we’re going to go over some of the more popular items that a Support can take.

There is a range of different Supports with different item builds, we will only go over items that are more commonly found on Supports and are not unique to each champion. For example, we won’t be talking about Pyke because he is a fringe case that can be built full AD. If you’re wanting to learn specific item builds, stay tuned because we will touch on that subject later on.

Ardent Censer

Ardent Censer

Ardent Censer is a core item for many utility or healing and shielding Supports. Ardent Censer gives AP, increased healing and shielding power and mana regeneration.

If you give an ally a heal or a shield, they will gain extra attack speed for a few seconds.

Examples of champions who benefit: Janna, Lulu, Nami.

Chemtech Putrifier

Chemtech Putrifier

Chemtech gives AP, ability haste and mana regeneration. It’s Passive also applies grievous wounds. If you deal magical damage to an enemy champion, they’ll have reduced healing briefly. If you heal or shield an ally champion, their next auto on an enemy champion will apply grievous wounds.

This item is great on champions who have healing or shielding tools.

Examples of champions who benefit: Janna, Soraka, Nami.

Imperial Mandate

Imperial Mandate

Imperial Mandate is a great item that allows you and your allies to deal damage. It gives AP, health and ability haste. It also gives mana regeneration.

Using CC tools on an enemy marks them, and when an ally autos or deals damage to them, the mark will detonate and deal extra damage.

This is a Mythic item, which grants all other Legendary items additional ability power.

Examples of champions who benefit: Zyra, Nami, Seraphine.

Knight’s Vow

Knight's Vow

Knight’s Vow is a good item on tank Supports. This item redirects incoming damage to a chosen ally and forces it to hurt you instead. This item gives health, haste and health regenreation.

Examples of champions who benefit: Nautilus, Thresh, Alistar.

Locket of the Iron Solari

Locket of the Iron Solari

Locket’s active gives your team a large AOE shield. While they’re near you, they also gain extra armor and magic resistance.

Locket gives health, haste, armor and magic resistance.

As Locket is a Mythic item, all your other legendary items provide increased defensive stats to Consecrate (which is the name of the passive that gives your allies extra defensive stats).

Examples of champions who benefit: Alistar, Thresh, Pantheon.

Mikael’s Blessing

Mikael's Blessing

Mikael’s is a very situational item. You buy it against teams with a lot of CC. The active removes all CC debuffs apart from knock-ups and suppression from an allied champion.

Mikael’s gives increased healing and shielding power, magic resistance and ability haste. It also gives mana regeneration, which makes it a good item on utility Supports.

Examples of champions who benefit: Janna, Soraka, Lulu.

Moonstone Renewer

Moonstone Renewer

Moonstone Renewer provides the user with AP, health, ability haste and mana regeneration. It is a great team fighting item as it offers healing to your allies in fights.

As this item is a Mythic item, it gives all of your other legendary items 5 ability haste.

Examples of champions who benefit: Seraphine, Janna, Lulu.

Redemption

Redemption

Redemption offers a large AOE heal that can give your allies additional healing and extra protection. It provides vision and deals a small portion of damage to enemies who are hit by it.

Redemption makes your heals and shields stronger, it also gives you health and mana regeneration. Finally, it gives you some health too.

Examples of champions who benefit: Soraka, Karma, Seraphine.

Shurelya’s Battlesong

Shurelya's Battlesong

Battlesong offers AP, health, ability haste and mana regeneration.

This items active gives you and your allies a large decaying movement speed buff while also empowering some of their next outgoing damage sources.

As Shurelya’s is a Mythic item, it grants all your other legendary items extra movement speed.

Examples of champions who benefit: Alistar, Rakan, Nautilus.

Staff of Flowing Water

Staff of Flowing Water

Healing or shielding an allied champion grants both of you additional movement speed and extra ability power briefly. This item works great on utility and healing champions as it gives AP, healing and shielding power and mana regeneration.

Examples of champions who benefit: Lulu, Janna, Seraphine.

Vigilant Wardstone

Vigilant Wardstone

Wardstone gives additional movement speed and ability haste.

This item will allow you to store up to 3 Control Wards. It will also allow you to place more Stealth and Control Wards. This item is not very good but if you intend to get it, you would get it as a last item.

Examples of champions who benefit: Thresh, Alistar, Rakan.

Zeke’s Convergence

Zekes Convergence

Zeke’s gives health, armor, mana and ability haste. It is a good item on champions who have lots of CC tools as it will allow you to deal extra damage to targets that have been immobilized by yourself.

This item is good on tanks who have CC tools.

Examples of champions who benefit: Thresh, Nautilus, Alistar.

Support items Tips and Tricks

Here are some tips for itemization as the Support:

  • Learn to adapt.
    • Adjust your item build whenever you need to. While our build paths or item suggests are a good basis to go by, make sure you adapt to whatever circumstance you’re playing in. For example, if the enemy has lots of AP damage- purchase Mercury Treads.
  • Make sure to purchase Control Wards.
    • You should always purchase a Control Ward whenever you can and place it somewhere on the map. Also, make sure that you buy them consistently throughout the game.
  • Prioritize Control Wards over items (in the late game).
    • Unless you’re going to complete or buy a much needed advanced item, instead of purchasing and filling up your item slots, save it for Control Wards. This will make warding objectives and taking Baron much safer.

How to find the right build for Support

If you’re struggling to find an appropriate build path for your champion. You have a few options available to you:

  • Trial and error
    • Just play the game and try to find an appropriate build path yourself by seeing what works well on your champion.
  • Copy the build from the Pre Game
    • As we mentioned at the top of the article, in the Pre Game, you can see what we recommend to build on your champion and when. This is useful as you can just launch it automatically before every game and get a build without having to search prior to the game starting.
  • Research Summoner Profiles
    • If you want to keep track of your own builds in your match history and study the builds of any summoner, our Summoner Profile feature for your LoL match history is your go-to tool.
  • Try Probuilds on the champion’s page
    • This is another great option because pro players are really smart and do a lot of mathematical equations and research to work out what fits best and when. E.g. Ezreal probuilds.
  • Try out some of the recommended items.
    • Each champion in the game has a dedicated list of items that Riot recommends to build. Give some of them ago and see what tickles your fancy.

All The LoL Items That Were Removed for Season 11

As part of the massive Preseason revamp to the League of Legends Item Shop, a lot of the older items that weren’t revamped were removed. They have removed these items for many reasons, but mostly because they overlap with new items or since they weren’t bought very often.

With some of the items that have been removed, we will discuss a similar item that has could be brought as a replacement. Take note that the recommended replacement items are not 1-to-1, but will be similar.

If you want to know about all the other new items Riot have implemented for Season 11, check out our other Season 11 item articles where we’ve broken down all the new items.

Adaptive Helm

Adaptive Helm

  • Adaptive Helm is not returning under a new name in Season 11. Helm was a rather niche item and only really worked against enemies who were AP, did damage over time, and was only able to be purchased on a select few champions.

Possible replacement item:

  • Spirit Visage– Gives health, magic resistance, health regen, and ability haste.

Athene’s Unholy Grail

Athene's Unholy Grail

  • Athenes was removed as a whole. It was basically a must-have item for every healing/shielding Support and as Riot wants to improve build paths, it had to be removed.

Possible replacement item:

  • Staff of Flowing Water– Gives AP, healing and shielding power and mana regen.

Frozen Mallet

Frozen Mallet

  • Frozen Mallet wasn’t purchased by a lot of champions and will not be returning in Season 11. It was too niche and didn’t really fit most champions.

Possible replacement item:

  • Blade of the Ruined King- Gives AD, attack speed, and life steal. Will provide extra movement speed too.

Hextech GLP-800

Hextech GLP-800

  • Hextech GLP will return as a Mythic Item under the name of Everfrost. However, unlike Hextech GLP, it will be used as more of a defensive tool rather than a pick tool like Hextech was.

Possible replacement item:

  • Everfrost: Gives AP, health, mana, and ability haste. Active will slow enemies in a cone.

Hextech Gunblade

Hextech Gunblade

  • Hextech Gunblade was only purchased on champions who wanted to one-shot enemies. It was not a viable option for almost all champions in the game, so this item’s getting removed.

Possible replacement item:

  • Riftmaker- Gives AP, health, ability haste, and omnivamp.

Spellbinder

Spellbinder

  • Spellbinder will not be making an appearance in 2021. It was too niche, hard to use, and was only really brought on Vladimir and a few other champions. Not too much to say about it really

Possible replacement item:

  • Rabadon’s Deathcap– Gives AP.

Statikk Shiv

Statikk Shiv

  • Riot has noted that Shiv’s lightning effect was either underwhelming or too strong. They found this item hard to balance which made it one of the factors as to why they canceled this item for Season 11.

Possible replacement item:

  • Runann’s Hurricane– Gives AD, attack speed, critical strike, and movement speed. Active makes your auto attacks focus nearby champions.

Twin Shadows

Twin Shadows

  • Twin Shadows offered a lot to people who went Glacial, but it didn’t offer anything else to anyone else. It will not make a return in 2021.

Possible replacement item:

  • Everfrost: Gives AP, health, mana, and ability haste. Active will slow enemies in a cone.

Some of these items will return under a new name. If you want to see if any one of these items has returned under a new name, check out our new item guides. We’ve broken down all the new Mythic and Legendary items, so it’s worth giving them a quick look over.

We will now discuss some of the items that were reworked rather than removed. These items are still in the game, but their names have changed. All of the items are now Mythic items instead of Legendary items.

  • Ludens Echo > Luden’s Tempest
  • Liandry’s Torment > Liandry’s Anguish
  • Hextech Protobelt-01 > Hextech Rocketbelt
  • Sunfire Cape > Sunfire Aegis
  • Righteous Glory > Turbo Chemtank
  • Iceborn Gauntlet > Frostfire Gauntlet
  • Shurelya’s Reverie > Shurelya’s Battlesong

These previously completed items are now Mythic items. Their name has remained the same.

  • Duskblade of Draktharr
  • Trinity Force
  • Locket of the Iron Solari

Thank you for reading, we hope you enjoyed this breakdown of the older items that were removed or replaced for Season 11. To find other guides related to the new Season 11 items, head here.

All the Items That Were Changed for Season 11

You’ve probably heard by now that the big change for this offseason was a massive revamp to the Item Shop.

So far, we’ve covered all the new Legendary items along with the Mythic Items for  ADCs, Assassins, Bruisers, Mages, and Supports.

In this guide, we’ll be covering all the older items that were adjusted or revamped for the new season.

If you want to know about all the other new items Riot has implemented for Season 11, check out our other Season 11 item articles where we’ll be breaking down all the new additions.

Before we move on, let’s talk about one of the biggest changes to items which is the new haste stat. Haste is replacing cooldown reduction – overall it’s similar to CDR as it allows you to use your abilities more often.

However, it doesn’t have a cap and you can buy as much haste as you like. Riot’s goal with this was to create greater flexibility with builds and how champions can use their abilities.

Many of the items we will talk about in this guide have haste, so keep an eye out!

Rapid Firecannon

P10.23 RFC

  • Total cost for this item has increased.
  • Because of the increase, the total attack speed has increased.
  • But as Riot wanted to change crit strike, they’ve reduced the amount of crit strike chance it gives.

Stormrazor

P10.23 Stormrazor

  • Total cost is down.
  • So is the amount of attack damage it gives.
  • The attack speed this item provides has been completely gutted.
  • Gives less critical strike chance.

Mercurial Scimitar

P10.23 Mercurial Scimitar

  • The total cost of this item has gone down.
  • The build path has changed from QSS, Vampiric Scepter and Pickaxe to QSS, Cloak of Agility and Pickaxe.
  • The AD this item provides has been decreased.
  • The magic resistance you get from this item is also down.
  • However, this item now gives some critical chance.
  • This item no longer gives any form of lifesteal.
  • The active has changed slightly. Instead of removing all disables, it now removes all disables excluding airborne.

Runaan’s Hurricane

P10.23 Runaan's Hurricane

  • The total cost has heavily increased.
  • The build path has changed from Zeal and 2 Daggers to Pickaxe, Zeal and a Dagger.
  • It now gives 25 AD.
  • The amount of crit strike you get has been reduced.
  • It now gives less movement speed.
  • The bolt damage is overall stronger.

Rylai’s Crystal Scepter

P10.23 Rylai's Crystal Scepter

  • The total cost has increased.
  • The build path has changed slightly. It now consists of Blasting Wand, Giant’s Belt and an Amplifying Tome whereas before it was a Blasting Wand, Amp Tone and a Ruby Crystal.
  • It still gives 90 AP.
  • The amount of health this item gives has increased.
  • It will now slow the enemy more.

Nashor’s Tooth

P10.23 Nashor's Tooth

  • There has been no change to the item’s total cost.

Season 11 Jungle Changes: Items and Camps

The annual Jungle changes have arrived! In this guide, we’ll be covering the changes to the two main Jungle items, Emberknife (red Smite) and Hailblade (blue smite), as well as the adjustments made to the jungle camps.

Here’s a quick look at what Riot’s motivations and goals were with the offseason changes leading into Season 11:

Jungle Items and Changes patch notes explanation

If you want to know about all the other new items Riot has implemented for Season 11, check out our other Season 11 item articles where we’ll be breaking down all the new additions.

Jungle Items

Emberknife and Hailblade share some properties:

  • Omnivamp versus monsters.
    • Omnivamp converts a percentage of all physical, magic, and true damage dealt into health.
  • Damage sears jungle mobs when they deal damage providing burn damage over 5 seconds.
  • Bonus experience against large camps.
  • Additional mana regeneration when in the jungle or river.

Their main differences naturally come from their Smites.

Emberknife

Emberknife

Once you’ve used Smite 5 times, the item is consumed and upgrades your Smite to Challenging Smite.

This Smite allows you to mark a target, deal bonus true damage to them, and take reduced damage from them.

Naturally, it’s the ideal option for duelists, carries, and aggressive invaders.

  • Champions who could use this item:
    • Lee Sin
    • Shaco
    • Nidalee

Hailblade

Hailblade

Once you’ve used Smite 5 times, the item is consumed and upgrades your Smite to Chilling Smite. This Smite allows you to deal damage to the enemy and steal some of their movement speed.

Hailblade is a great option for junglers that want to enable their team through utility and CC rather than damage output.

  • Champions who could use this item:
    • Amumu
    • Elise
    • Sett

Jungle Camps

Jungle mobs were also slightly adjusted on Patch 10.23. Riot’s main goal is to create pathing diversity and to make the jungle camps more interesting.

Jungle Camp Adjustments

The Gromp

Gromp Changes

  • Magic resistance is set to 20 at all levels.
  • He now has less health overall.
  • “Toad Rage” has been removed which basically empowered his first 3 auto attacks.
  • Instead, he now has “Toad Soup” which restores health and mana once you kill him.
  • Overall though, Gromp will do more damage in the early game and slightly less damage in the late game.

Blue Sentinel (Blue Buff)

Blue Sentinel Changes

  • Magic resistance is set to 20 at all levels.
  • Armor is set to 20 at each level.
  • Health has been reduced at all stages of the game.
  • Blue Buff moves faster now.

Greater Murkwolf (Big Wolf)

Greater Murkwolf Changes

  • Armor is set to 20.
  • The Greater Murkwolf now has magic resistance.
  • Slightly less healthy overall.
  • But the wolf does move faster now.

Murkwolf (Small Wolves)

Murkwolf Changes

  • Has no magic resistance.
  • Has more health overall.
  • Movement speed has increased.

Crimson Raptor (Big Raptor)

Crimson Raptor changes

  • Has 20 armor at all ranks.
  • Has 20 magic resistance at all ranks.
  • Is healthier overall.
  • Has more movement speed.

Lesser Raptor (Small Raptors)

Lesser Raptor Changes

  • Overall has more health.
  • Has more movement speed.

Red Brambleback (Red Buff)

Red Brambleback Changes

  • Red Buffs armor is set to 20 at all levels.
  • The Red Buffs magic resistance is now at 20.
  • The health of the Red Buff has been reduced at all levels.

Ancient Krug (Big Krug)

Ancient Krug Changes

  • Armor is set to 20 at all ranks.
  • Magic resistance is set to 20 at all ranks.
  • Big Krug’s health has been slightly reduced.
  • Finally, the movement speed has been increased for the Ancient Krug.

Krug (Smaller Krug)

Krug Changes

  • Movement speed has been increased.
  • The experience you get from killing them has been reduced overall.
  • They now give less gold too.

Lesser Krug (Very Small Krugs)

Lesser Krug Changes

  • The Lesser Krug’s movement speed has been increased
  • The experience they provide has been overall increased.
  • They also now give more gold.

Rift Scuttler (Crab)

Rift Scuttler Changes

  • Armor and magic resistance set to 20.
  • The Rift Scuttler’s health has been reduced.
  • It now spawns with a 60% max health shield. The shield will get broken if you CC the Crab.
  • As the shield will disappear if you CC the Crab, it no longer loses its armor and magic resistance once it’s CC’d.
  • Finally, killing the Rift Scuttler no longer restores mana or health.

Thankfully there hasn’t been such a huge change this time around for Junglers, but it will definitely take some time to adjust to.

New Mythic Assassin Items for Season 11

Wondering how the new assassin Mythic items work? You’ve come to the right place! If you haven’t heard, the biggest change coming to this Preseason is the addition of powerful Mythic items that are part of the new item shop.

Here’s how Mythic items work:

Mythic Items patch notes

In this guide, we’ll breakdown the assassin Mythics explaining how they work and making recommendations for who you should use them on.

Note that some of these items will work wonders on champions who are in different roles too. There will also probably be other Mythic items that may work for assassins that aren’t listed here s so be sure to experiment!

The items we’ll be covering here are:

  • Duskblade of Draktharr
  • Eclipse
  • Prowler’s Claw

If you want to know about all the other new items Riot has implemented for Season 11, check out our other Season 11 item articles where we’ll be breaking down all the new additions.

Duskblade of Draktharr

Mythic - Duskblade of Draktharr

Duskblade gives AD, lethality, and 25 ability haste.

When you attack a champion, you’ll deal extra damage and slow them (at 99% it’s almost a root).

The next part is the craziest part of the item – if the champion you damaged dies shortly afterward, the cooldown is refreshed and you’ll become invisible briefly.

  • Mythic Passive
    • Grants all other Legendary items 5 ability haste.

Champions who could use this item:

  • Talon
  • Rengar
  • Zed

Eclipse

Mythic - Eclypse

Eclipse gives AD, lethality, and omnivamp (spell vamp).

If you hit a champion with two sources of damage within a short period of time, you’ll deal extra damage and you will gain shield and bonus movement speed.

By “two sources”, this can be two attacks, two abilities, or an attack and an ability.

  • Mythic Passive:
    • Grants all other Legendary items 4% armor pen.

Champions who could use this item:

  • Kled
  • Camille
  • Renekton

Prowler’s Claw

Mythic - Prowler's Claw

Last but not least, Prowler’s Claw gives AD, lethality, and 10 ability haste.

The item’s active allows you to dash through a target dealing bonus damage.

For the next 3 seconds, you will deal increased damage to the target, allowing you to really hone in on the target you’re focusing.

  • Mythic Passive
    • Grants all other Legendary items 5 lethality.

Champions who could use this item:

  • Kayn
  • Rengar
  • Pantheon

New Bruiser/Fighter Mythic Items for Season 11

In this edition of our Season 11 new item coverage, we’ll be covering the Mythic items for bruisers and fighters!

These items are:

  • Divine Sunderer
  • Goredrinker
  • Stridebreaker
  • Trinity Force

If you haven’t heard of Mythic items, here’s a quick description from the patch notes:

Mythic Items patch notes blurb

Before we begin, note that CDR has been replaced by haste. Haste is similar to cooldown reduction as it allows you to use your abilities more often.

However, it doesn’t have a cap and you can buy as much haste as you like. Riot’s goal with this was to create greater flexibility with builds and how champions can use their abilities.

Some of the following items will have haste so keep an eye out!

If you want to know about all the other new items Riot has implemented for Season 11, check out our other Season 11 item articles where we’ll be breaking down all the new additions.

Divine Sunderer

Mythic - Divine Sunderer

Divine Sunderer gives attack damage, health, and 20 ability haste.

After using an ability, your next attack is enhanced and deals more damage based on the target’s max health.

This along with its Mythic Passive makes Divine Sunderer a solid option against tanky enemies.

  • Mythic Passive
    • Grants all other Legendary items 5% armor pen.

Champions who could use this item:

  • Aatrox
  • Renekton
  • Pantheon

Goredrinker

Mythic - Goredrinker

Goredrinker gives you AD, health, 20 ability haste, and base health regeneration.

This item’s active is a slash that deals bonus damage to nearby enemies and restores missing health for each champion hit, granting duelists some value in teamfights.

Goredrinker also grants Spite, which provides additional attack damage based on your missing health.

  • Mythic Passive
    • Grants all other Legendary items 5 ability haste.

Champions who could use this item:

  • Tryndamere
  • Kled
  • Darius

Stridebreaker

Mythic - Stridebreaker

Stridebreaker gives AD, attack speed, health, and ability haste.

The items active allows you to lunge a short distance, dealing damage to enemies and slowing them briefly.

In addition, dealing physical damage grants extra movement speed. Overall, it’s a great choice for champions that want to close the gap and chase their enemies down.
