10 Balance Changes Demacia Needs

Hey everyone, Kuvira here, back at it again with another design article featuring the proud military kingdom of Demacia!

Surprisingly, Demacia is the region that I ended up working on the most.

I’ve come up with over 30+ changes to different Demacia cards from the foundation set to the latest expansion.

In this article, I decided to showcase 10 changes without including any champions.

Let’s get started

1. Petricite Broadwing
petricite broadwing (lor card)10 Demacia Changes (1)

Petricite Broadwing is the most played Demacia unit, followers and champions included. It’s present in almost HALF all Demacia decks despite being tied to the formidable archetype that was introduced in the latest expansion.

Demacia already has its fair share of Challenger units, but Petricite Broadwing is by far the best. A 2 mana 0|3 Challenger with formidable is way too strong.

Every card in the game has a value floor and value ceiling, meaning that every card provides X amount of value in the worst-case scenario and Y amount of value in the best case. Cards that have a high floor X and high ceiling Y are always better than cards with the opposite values.

Petricite Broadwing’s value floor AND ceiling are way too high. In the worst-case scenario, it’s a 2 mana 3|3 Challenger unit that trades into something and dies, the opponent will always be down on value if they try to remove it with a spell since it has 3 health, Get Excited, Culling Strike, etc… all cost 3+ mana compared to Petricite Broadwing that costs 2.

The card’s ceiling is also extremely high. When combined with cards like Troll Chant, Shield of Durand, Elixir of Iron, or any other spell that buffs health, Petricite Broadwing becomes unkillable with damage spells and starts trading with big champions and followers without dying.

Formidable is a keyword that weakens followers when they take damage but it’s not enough of a drawback for this card to not be overpowered.

Figuring out how to change Petricite Broadwing was pretty challenging. The cost can’t really be changed since 3 mana would break the curve of the archetype it was designed in and the only changeable stat is its health, which is also impossible to change, 2 health would be too weak. All of this means that the only alterable factors are its keywords, the problem is that it has to keep Formidable since it’s the archetype it belongs in, and challenger can’t be changed since it’s a bird, and ALL BIRDS in Demacia have Challenger.

This is the change that I came up with:
10 Demacia Changes (2)10 Demacia Changes (3)

This change is obviously very similar to Fleetfeather Tracker but Petricite only gets Challenger for the round after you play a unit.

I feel like this is a great condition that reduces both of Petricite Broadwing’s value floor and ceiling. Making the card still playable in the Formidable archetype but less of an auto 3x in every single competitive Demacia deck.

2. Dawnspeakers
dawnspeakers jpg10 Demacia Changes (4)

Dawnspeakers is a card that holds a lot of sentimental value to me, it’s the first card I’ve ever crafted for the “Dawnspiders” deck that everyone was playing during the first weeks when
the open beta got released. This deck was actually made by Precipic and me in closed beta.

10 Demacia Changes (6)

If you guys were curious, it looked like this. Believe it or not, this was the first-ever LoR meta Deck and ladder was full of mirrors of this during the first couple of weeks.

Dawnspeakers was used here to buff the spider-filled board and make everything huge. Unfortunately, when people started playing Burn, Control, and Elusives, Dawnspiders disappeared from the meta.

Dawnspeakers is a pretty unique card, I believe it was designed to fit in Lucian/Senna decks since those archetypes already benefit from allies dying. The problem is that the round end effect is somewhat clunky, you don’t get anything when an ally dies until the next turn which is too slow. On top of that, it’s reliant on board but needs you to kill your own units, this leads to emptying hands fast.

The rework that I’m suggesting should help the card see play in the archetype it was initially designed to synergize with while making it considerable in other decks like ephemerals swarm.
10 Demacia Changes (7)

The instant effect can create interesting spots that the opponent has to play around. This new version can be used to protect a unit by sacrificing another with Single Combat for Example, or push damage when used before or during attacks.

3. Radiant Strike

Radiant Strike (LoR Card)

In the spirit of helping Lucian and his archetypes, I want to talk about Radiant Strike. +1|+1 at Burst speed for 1 mana isn’t that bad, in fact, this card has seen play during Shen/Fiora metas where cheap combat tricks were really important.

Unfortunately with the game’s power creep, Radiant Strike completely stopped seeing play when better combat tricks like Troll Chant, Sharpsight, and Pale Cascade… got released.

The rework I’m suggesting is meant to make Radiant Strike a great spell in the “allies dying” archetype of Demacia and other SI decks, especially now that Sharpsight isn’t a staple combat trick after its nerf.

10 Demacia Changes (8)

This change makes sense with Demacia cards like Radiant Guardian Vanguard Redeemer, Dawnpeakers, Lucian, etc… Primarily when combined with Shadow Isles.

4. Kadregrin the Ruined

Kadregrin The Ruined (LoR Card)
10 Demacia Changes (9)

Kadregrin the Ruined is a Demacia dragon that came out during the Viego/Akshan expansion with the Ruined followers package. It was meant to work with Viego and or Dragon decks.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t seen play in either of those archetypes. In fact, it’s in the top 5 least played Demacia cards and this is mainly due to its very underwhelming effect. A 6 mana follower that grants another dragon or champion challenger on play is such an expensive effect for its cost.

I’m assuming that the idea was to stay in Demacia’s challenger flavor while giving Dragons and Viego decks a way to remove the opponent’s units by challenging them.

I wanted to keep the same initial design goal when reworking this card, so I came up with this:
10 Demacia Changes (10)

This is still very flavorful since Demacia is all about strike effects and provides a much more powerful effect than just Challenger.

Kadregrin the Ruined can now be played on defense turns and actually do something, instead of paying 6 mana for no effect that same turn. I can see this new version in many Dragon decks, curving it with Shyvana to level her on defense/before the attack, or with Fused Firebrand since it has Spellshield. It also doesn’t feel awkward to play Kadregrin the Ruined on Screeching Dragon now which is very important for Dragon archetypes.

Apart from Dragons, this change also works really well with Viego. It allows you to sacrifice an ally to trigger Viego’s effect and remove a unit from the opponent’s board.

5. Vanguard Lookout
Vanguard Lookout (LoR Card)

10 Demacia Changes (11)

Have you guys ever put this card in any of your decks? No? Neither have I. 4 health on turn 2 is a great defensive stat, the problem is that it has no effect at all apart from being an Elite.

It has never seen play in elite decks and will never see play if it doesn’t actually do something to help the archetype. Even though Elites got multiple huge buffs in the latest patch in addition to a unique new spell, the archetype is still not seeing enough play on ladder. However, the changes have moved elites from a meme archetype to a playable one which is nice.

I remember LoR devs have said in the past that their goal is to make every card at least considerable/playable in some decks, meme or not, as long as they’re seeing play.

Elites is a deck that vomits out units on the board and buffs them all to put pressure on the opponent. One of their main weaknesses is card advantage since Demacia is not known for having draw or card generation. The rework I’m suggesting for Vanguard Lookout should fix that issue.10 Demacia Changes (12)

This is inspired by one of my favorite Demacia cards, Egghead Researcher. This change should help Elite decks replenish their hand after getting their units removed while also working with Elite-specific cards like Penitent Squire and Vanguard Squire.

Egghead Researcher was played in decks outside of Dragons, Lux/Karma, Fiora/Shen, etc… and I expect Vanguard Lookout to also see play in archetypes other than Elites which is nice in terms of deckbuilding creativity and deck diversity.

The rest of these changes are pretty self-explanatory so I won’t be writing as much about them:

6. Tianna Crownguard

7. Kadregrin the Infernal

9. Golden Aegis

10. Reinforcements

I want to thank “Zinke”, an LoR player and friend who helped me with some of these changes, mainly Radiant Strike.

Feel free to DM me on Twitter if you have any questions or just want to talk about LoR stuff!

5 Targon DecksWorth Trying (Beyond the Bandlewood)

How the mighty have fallen.

Where once its name was a curse upon the lips of all ladder players, now it sits in the time-out corner and waits for someone to remember it has cards other than tiny cantrips.

I’m Jordan “WhatAmI” Abronson and I have a confession to make. I miss playing Targon Invoke decks.

Yes, I know that at the end of the day the power level just isn’t quite there right now for them to make it into tier one.

However, we’re in that wonderful grace period between seasonal ladder counting and the next one firing.

What better time to whip out some old favorites and remember why we love them?

1. Spooky Dragon

[See Spooky Dragon deck details]

This one has been my favorite variation on the concept for quite a while now.

Whatever the different tech cards end up being there is something immensely satisfying about making a big unit, bonking your opponent with it once, and then throwing it at their head.

The current iteration of Shadow Isles/Targon is using Thresh and Aurelion Sol as a kind of backup engine to Starshaping and Atrocity.

While Thresh is generally more a removal spell plus deterrent package if your opponent is not careful zero mana space dragons are most certainly a force to be reckoned with.

Thresh Level 1 (LoR card)atrocity lor card

Beyond that, we’ve got some new faces in the form of Loping Telescope and Tenor of Terror to help the value train keep chugging along.

Tenor is ridiculously easy to activate in this deck as all you need to do is cast any created card. After that, they are basically just a big house spider.

The deck rounds out with its plethora of removal spells. Old fans may note Sunburst has come in hot here all the way to a three of.

Look no further than the mass of Sion and Nami decks on ladder for the reasoning behind that particular tech choice.

2. Zoe/Vi

Zoe Vi (LoR Deck)

Deck Code: CECQMAYJBELVIVS4MAAQICINAECQIEIBAUFJQAIBAICAQAYCAECBWNACAMCAKDIBAUFK6AIA

[See Zoe/Vi deck details]

Another old favorite with a few new faces, this deck was originally titled “Rubin’s Zoo,” but it’s iterated so many times from there we mostly just call it by its champion names these days.

This version is a lot heavier on the control side of things than many used to be.

Instead of maxing out on Mystic Shots and Get Excited’s, Sump Fumes and Sunburst are here to keep Poppy and Sion decks honest.

This fits in with the new game plan of Aloof Travelers taking the slot over Subpursible.

Sump Fumes (LoR card)Sunburst (LoR Card)

While we do lose a lot of our burn out potential we get to focus in heavily on answering our opponent’s threats.

In a metagame with as much speed and power as this one has I think if we want a chance to survive that’s the only real way we’re going to manage to do it.

Plus there are few better feelings in Runeterra than casting Iterative Improvement on your Aloof Travelers.

The value this deck turns out is just absolutely insane and the control player in me cannot help but cackle in glee as all my opponent’s power cards burn away.

3. PoppyGon

PoppyGon (LoR Deck)

Deck Code: CEBQEAYJBFRAMBIKFF2IIAMYAGTQDLYBAECASDICAECQUBAEAMEROI2UKYAQGBIKAGTADUIB

[See Poppygon deck details]

Back when they were at the height of their power we started calling them “Targon Piles.”

This was because you could really just put the fifteen strongest invoke cards in with whatever else you wanted and it would all turn out pretty ok in the end.

Poppy has so much straight-up strength that her decks have been called “Poppy Piles,” as well.

So I figured, why not put them together? This deck is a little lower on the removal spell package. Your only packing a few key shots so you’re going to have to hold them for the proper moment.

That said what you gain in compensation is protection for your key units.

Leveling Zoe or Poppy are both very Legitimate win conditions when you have six pump spells in your deck to keep them safe.

And either champion hitting level two is generally a death sentence.

Zoe level 1 (LoR Card)Poppy Level 1 (LoR Card)

If that doesn’t work though the traditional unreasonably value of both Bandle City and Targon is on full display. Mayor, Telescope, and Aloof are here to cause their traditional brand of mischief, and Starshaping is always a good way to shut down a game that has just gone on a bit too long.

4. Bamboozle

Bamboozle (LoR Deck)

Deck Code: CEBQGAYJENKNOAIDAIBAGBQIAEAQEKIEAMBQSM2VMAAQGAQJAIBAEBIJAIAQEARRAIBAGAQFCQAQCAQM

[See Bamboozle deck details]

Yes I know it has Lee Sin in it but I promise that is not the main goal of this deck.

This might in fact be the only deck that carries that particular champion that isn’t going all-in on kicking its opponent in the face.

Here more than anything we are a Karma control deck. Stunning, bouncing, and dragon-ling-ing our way into the late game.

After that, there are few more fun ways to close out a game than doubling up a Starshaping. Or even better doubling up the Cosmic Insight that follows.

Karma level 1 (LoR card)Starshaping (LoR card)

This one has been far too slow for any meta lately, but the play patterns it puts out are still absolutely brutal. On top of that because of the Karma choice over Zoe, it has always been a good call for late game Lee Sin mirrors.

It will also always have a special place in my heart. One of the testing groups I am a part of put it together and I told them it looked ridiculous and they were “bamboozling” me.

They then proceeded to kick my behind with it for solid days straight, and when I eventually picked it up it did amazing in tournaments.

5. Blood Moon

Blood Moon (LoR Deck)

Deck Code: CECAGAIDCQRS4AICAMEQEAYJKZOAIBIDAECASDICAQBQSFZDKRQACBAJBUAA

[See Blood Moon deck details]

This is another fun one I am picking back up and playing around with that just never quite achieved the power level I had hoped for this season.

While Sion, Draven, and Lost Soul are both impressive tools, Spacey Sketcher just can’t really keep up with the discard power that Piltover and Zaun offer.

Don’t get me wrong, seeing The Great Beyond on the board alongside a leveled-up Sion is extremely cool.

Even better having Sunburst or Comet in the Sion mirror is absolute destruction. But the issue is the card draw and in direct correlation, the consistency.

Sion level 1 (lor card) Sion level 2 (lor card)

The other Sion decks get an immense amount of card draw from their region splash. While Targon has many strengths, actually drawing real cards out of your deck instead of creating fun new versions of them in your hand has never really been on that list.

That means we just can’t put together our crazy synergies as effectively as many of the other contenders for Sion’s throne, so in the race to tier one we get left a bit behind.

Conclusion

As I said at the top, for tournament performance as much as I’ve tried I don’t really think that Targon Invoke is where it is at right now.

That said it’s still an awful lot of fun if this is your play style, and the next couple of weeks are the perfect time on ladder to whip out whatever your old favorites are without any silly ranking consequences getting in your way.

What Will The Bandlewood Mechanics Look Like?

Yordles. You either love or hate them.

With the announcement of the Bandlewoods, there is speculation of what Yordles might be added to the new region and maybe the possibility of champions being repeated as other Yordles such as Teemo and Lulu already have homes in other regions in Legends of Runeterra.

I wanted won’t be speculating on what champions will be added to Bandlewoods, but more so hints, potential flavor, and mechanics of the Bandlewoods.

To see our predictions and some theorycrafted Yordle champion cards, check out WhatAmI’s article, 4 Yordle Champion Cards Theorycrafted for LoR’s Bandlewood Expansion.

Bandle City + Bandlewood Lore

In Riot’s most recent update: “What’s Next in 2021 | Dev Video” Game Director Andrew Yipp drops a couple of hints when talking about the new region!

Before we get into the quote, I wanted to take a quick look at what Bandlewood is according to lore.

Bandle City is a mysterious, spirit realm in Runeterra that mortals often speculate on but it is not the same as the Bandlewoods!

Yordles can use hidden portals to travel throughout Runeterra and also have access to Bandle City.

This brings up the question: What is a “Bandlewood”? Bandlewoods are the area around the hidden portals as the portals leak some magic which causes colorful overgrowth to happen on Runeterra’s land.

This could mean that the Bandlewood cards might be in various locations of Runeterra at different portals rather than being in the spirit world itself.

It is important to note that Bandlewoods are a safe haven for Yordles, so this could mean that we have Yordles from Bandle City but also from other, associated regions.

Will there be dual colors/regions?

Because Bandlewoods are scattered throughout Runeterra, this makes me wonder if there is a possibility that Yordles such as Teemo might be Bandle City as well as Piltover and Zaun.

Who knows, maybe other cards might have two regions that they belong to.

I would guess this would most likely be Bandlewoods + another region. I would be surprised if there were many types of these cards (if any at all).

Runeterra is a fairly new game, so dual color cards is something I expect further down the line, but if it is limited to one region then that might be a different story. Let’s get on to Yipp’s quote that has several hints in it.

Here is the full quote before I break it down:

“It’s the region that is everywhere and nowhere. Full of magic, whimsy, mischief, and lots of Yordles. We’re going to Bandle City! And beyond the Bandlewood we’ll journey through portals with Yordles and meet tons of champions all across all of Runeterra.

Wherever their curiosity leads, they’ll discover new friends and reconnect with old ones along the way. Keep an eye out for the tricksters though, and maybe pull a few pranks of your own.”

This gives a lot more clues than meets the eye. First, “It’s the region that is everywhere and nowhere.”

I covered this earlier saying that there are portals with Bandlewood surrounding them throughout Runeterra, so there isn’t too much more to dig in here.

“We’re going to Bandle City! And beyond the Bandlewood we’ll journey through portals with Yordles and meet tons of champions all across all of Runeterra.”

Bandlewood preview splash

After further inspection, this quote confirms that we will be entering Bandle City and not just the Bandlewoods.

This means that we will have access to the spirit world which makes a lot of sense as it will help with the region’s identity. Personally, spirit makes me think of Ionia, but the mystical part makes me think of Targon.

I do think there is a possibility that Bandlewoods might have a magic, surreal feeling more like Targon and possibly the peace of Ionia.

Who will we see?

Yipp’s quote also mentions that we will meet lots of champions through Runeterra. As most players know, there are multiple champions that don’t have a regional home in Runeterra.

I wonder if there is a possibility that some of these champions might find a home in the Bandlewoods as there are a limited number of Yordles.

teemo branches

This would also make more sense why it is called Bandlewoods and not Bandle City as some of the potential champions wouldn’t have access to Bandle City, but they would have access to the Bandlewoods on Runeterra.

He also mentions traveling through portals which also reminds me of Targon as you might have noticed Stomper and Zoe have portals in their card art.

I assume the Bandlewood Portals are different from the Targonian ones, but it makes me wonder if these will just be card art or potentially a card similar to the likes of Syncopation.

“Wherever their curiosity leads, they’ll discover new friends and reconnect with old ones along the way.”

To me, this just screams that there will be champion repeats. Reconnecting with old friends along the way makes sense.

This makes me wonder if there will be different names for the champions and will they be similar to skin lines from Runeterra?

It’s hard to say, but I can’t wait to see! The discovery of new friends is pretty obvious as it is saying there will be new champions. Not much of a surprise there!

Flavor and Mechanics

“Keep an eye out for the tricksters though, and maybe pull a few pranks of your own.”

I also think that this is a huge hint for the flavor of the region. Yordles are small but often mighty. There are also multiple characters who are known to be tricksters.

I wouldn’t be surprised if like Yordles in League of Legends that there are annoying mechanics that these Yordles share as well. This makes me almost want to guarantee that Elusive will be a keyword present in the Bandlewoods.

bandlewood magical background

I’d be shocked if it wasn’t. The “maybe pull a few pranks of your own” makes me lean toward it being a region that also has access to multiple combat tricks.

This would also make sense with the idea of Yordles being tiny but also mighty (with the help of some combat tricks).

There is also the possibility that this a reference to Yordles using Glamour. Glamour is a magical powder that changes a Yordle’s appearance to a more favorable to whoever is looking at them.

This makes me wonder if there will be more choose one or the other type cards that look more favorable to you. The Wings and The Wave would be an example of this mechanic that I wouldn’t be surprised expanded into the new region as well.

A lot of players aren’t sure what to expect from the Bandlewoods, and I’m not quite sure either but speculating sure is fun! This is the tenth and final region being added to Runeterra! I can’t wait to see what we get in Legends of Runeterra next!

4 New Potential Yordle LoR Champions

The new spoiler season should be just around the corner and unless you’ve been hiding under a particularly impressive specimen of sediment, you’ll have heard that Bandle City is our final region.

If you missed out on the reveal, the Bandlewood expansion was revealed in a recent Riot video.

I’m Jordan “WhatAmI” Abronson and today we leave behind the reasonable and logical worlds of strategy and deck building for rampant speculation on four fun Yordles we’d love to see show up.

*Quick Disclaimer*

Are all of these cards going to be balanced? Of course not.

These are thematic looks at how the awesome lore of these beloved League of Legends characters might fit into the Runeterra-verse.

I’ll try to keep my ridiculous theories somewhat in line with current game balance, but I make absolutely no promises of success in regards to that model.

Today we’re here to have fun. That said, please welcome our Yordles…

1. Poppy

Poppy theorycrafted LoR card level 1

The first thing that most folks think when seeing this champion is “OhGodNotTheFace,” which is not particularly conducive to card design.

The second thought is, “That’s one tough Yordle,” and thankfully we’ve got that mechanic worked right into our core gameplay.

Hard to kill, way more powerful than her small stature would suggest, good at running people into walls, and almost suicidally brave, those are what come to mind when I think of this particular Yordle knight.

That, and a comically oversized hammer for bonking the villains with.

Poppy theorycrafted LoR card level 2

She’ll need some help to get it done, but with a bit of support to keep her alive Poppy can absolutely nuke opposing boards.

Unfortunately, she’s not good at knowing when she’s getting in over her head and will run up against whatever is thrown her way by the opponent whether it’s good for her or not. We’ve all had top lanes like that though, haven’t we?

2. Veigar

Veigar theorycrafted LoR card level 1

Ah yes, the old infinitely scaling ball of indomitable evil that is so absolutely focused on not being cute it’s almost hard to take seriously. Who’s an adorable dark avatar of carnage and slaughter? You are, yes you are.

Sure he starts as something tiny and easily squashable, but if you don’t step on him early then this little guy gets out of control quickly.

Leave him alone for too long and he’ll even bother to stop farming to rampage down the mid lane and destroy your poor defenseless nexus.

Veigar theorycrafted LoR card level 2

I wasn’t quite sure how to capture one of my favorite mages without bringing spells into it so I shrugged and decided, eh, rules are for chumps let’s run with it.

This little dude also has some very cool potential synergies with Kegs, Discard, and anyone that finds Spellshielded units in need of a good talking to.

3. Kled

Kled theorycrafted LoR card level 1

Chaaaaaarrrrrge! ….Yeah, no, that’s about all there is to say about this one. Have at ‘em Kled, let’s see what you’ve got.

Look, sometimes you just want to smash faces in. Sometimes you want to do that so much that you simply can’t get onto the field without running straight at the closest face available.

Also, we’d looked into some control or midrange strategies and it was time to give aggro some love.

Kled theorycrafted LoR card level 2

I’ll also admit to having some level of secret fascination with breaking the rules inherent in game design. When the Shuriman level three champions came out I was over the moon and was a bit disappointed when getting there was too hard to make the payoffs worth it.

This time instead we are going in the complete opposite direction with the idea of a negative Level Up combined with a Level Down mechanic.

And speaking of friends, who really need to break the game for their lore to shine…

4. Gnar

Gnar theorycrafted LoR card level 1

Gnar. Shuppudupa, be-maga. Yo top sha Nigishu. Gnar-Gnar. Shu-shu pana ahahhahahah! Bagaran oo-ve ha-ha midanaga!

I’ve played around with a bunch of different templates for this cuddly mad hulkster and out of all of them I keep feeling like simple is best.

Could we write two walls of text about boomerangs and bouncing and different form swapping necessities? Sure, but it all starts to look kind of muddled.

For me, I’d love to see this friend showing up as just a solid-statted beater that will absolutely destroy the opponent if you poke him.

Gnar theorycrafted LoR card level 2

The cool thing here is that it doesn’t have to be the opponent doing the poking.

Ice Shard and Transfusion come to mind as cool ways to self-proc the Gnar Ultimate and swing in for massive damage as early as turn five.

Careful though, plans like that can go awry as he won’t get large unless he actually makes it through the turn. Keep a wary eye out for Flocks, Ravenous or otherwise.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, the likelihood of these folks actually showing up or looking anything like I envisioned them is slim to none with all the Yordles there are for Riot to choose from.

That said, Bandle City has got me hyped for all the cool new mechanics it could showcase and all the powerful, adorable friends and build arounds it’s got waiting.

I’ll catch you next time where, fingers crossed, I’ll be able to showcase some of those for you.

The Ruination vs Sentinels of Light LoR Spoilers Day 7

What good is any criminal mastermind without their crew to back them up?

I’m Jordan “WhatAmI” Abronson and Akshan looked pretty sweet yesterday so today we’ve brought along the rest of the heist team to help him out.

Let’s see how they measure up.

Here are the Piltover/Zaun and Targon cards from today’s reveal:

  • Defective Swapbot + Swapbot’s Swap (Piltover/Zaun follower + spell)
  • Frightened Ibex (Targon follower)

We’re revealing new Ruination cards every day on our spoiler page.

To build decks with the new cards, head to our Deck Builder.

Defective Swapbot

Defective Swapbot (LoR card)

  • Defective Swapbot
    • 4 mana 4|3
    • Text – Play: Swap my stats with another unit.

Swapbot's Swap (LoR card)

The obvious and immediate comparison here is going to be Laurent Bladekeeper. Four mana, reasonably stated beater, that gets to provide a buff as it comes down.

The problem is that the two cards are almost nothing alike.

For this card to be good it wants to be granting a huge stat boost to a small unit with good keywords, which means you’ll end up with a tiny chump blocker alongside your newly buffed friend, not a 3/3. Also this effect is a skill, which makes it respond-able. Mystic shot anyone?

The upside here is that it can target the opponent’s units as well. Turning your opponent’s Nautilus, Malphite, or Aurelion Sol for instance into a 4/3 is rather hilarious.

At a more reasonable level even re-stating something like an Alpha Wildclaw or a Hecarim does not suck.

I think if this card sees play it is more as a control tool than as a combo one. If you are playing it on turn four to target your own units you might get some small value, but if you use it as an answer to your opponent’s late game threats you can potentially blow them completely out of the water.

Frightened Ibex

Frightened Ibex (LoR card)

  • Frightened Ibex
    • 1 mana 1|2
    • Text – When I’m supported, give me and my supporting ally +1|+1 this round.

Ok, not to get too excited over a simple one-drop but this is everything the support archetype wanted.

It applies early pressure, and it protects the supporter making the dream of getting multiple attacks worth of value that much more likely.

Flower child is nice and all, but this is going to be the premier new support archetype one drop.

The only downside here, and what may keep it from seeing play, is that it’s in Targon.

While we’ve tried Targon support a bit generally Demacia/Ionia has been where it’s at to take advantage of Lulu buffing challenger units.

Who knows though, maybe this little guy will be enough to push Targon support in power over that of its Ionian brethren.

Bonus Deck: SwapBeam

SwapBeam (LoR deck 7-10)

Deck code: CEBQEAYEAUIQEAYJLTMQCBABAQICMNBYAMAQIBAUAIAQIGZHAUBQSSKUKVLGAAA

[See SwapBeam deck details]

One of this deck’s biggest faults has always been that it’s a control deck with very few ways of efficiently answering large threats.

You can occasionally get a meteor from a Solari Priestess or fire off a large Themogenic or Tri-beam, but none of those feel particularly reliable.

Enter Mr. Swapbot stage left. You’re very rarely going to play this unit on curve, but whenever you do it’ll be a beating.

Completely reversing the tempo swing your opponent thinks they just got is always a fun moment.

Bonus points though if you do play this on curve because your proud opponent just slammed a Yeti of some variety. That’s absolutely adorable, here, try attacking through my 5/5 robot with your 4/3. Good luck.

Bonus-Bonus Deck: The Ionian and the Furious

The Ionian and The Furious (LoR deck 7-10)

Deck code: CECACBAJCIBQGAQBAIFAKAYJBQUUOUK4AIAQECIMAEAQGCJDAMAQGAQUAIBQSE2VAIAQEARR

[See The Ionian and The Furious deck details]

With a callout to Dominic “Family is more powerful than the laws of physics,” Torreto, this deck is all about teamwork.

Unfortunately, we don’t really have the room for enough spells to make Taric a worthwhile inclusion so instead, we are going lower to the ground and beefing up old aggro fan favorite in Zed.

The higher up the curve we go the larger and harder to interact with our beefy friends are going to get.

Mountain Sojourners toping us off with the ability to make an entire board nearly unassailable.

If that’s not enough to end a game then between all the supports, buffs, and gems flying around, Arbiter of the Peak is going to become a low-mana 6/6 overwhelm unreasonably fast.

Let’s see them deal with that nonsense after they’ve exhausted their resources on the rest of our deck.

We’re revealing new The Ruination and Sentinels of Light cards every day at our spoiler page. To build decks with the new cards, head to our Deck Builder.

Strengths and Weaknesses Series Part 3: Freljord

We decided to chill out for a while but we’re back with part three of this series showcasing the buff-blue boys.

I’m Jordan “WhatAmI” Abronson and I’ll be your guide today through this frozen wasteland as we dig into what makes Freljord a powerhouse of a region.

Freljord Overview

Freljord often feels like the most misunderstood of all the regions.

People look at the variety of powers that these hearty mountain survivors offer and think it all boils down to big butts and sweeper effects.

While those are certainly an important part of this region’s identity that is far from all we can find here.

Freljord Strengths

The Ramp

Catalyst of Aeons (LoR card)

While this may be on the decline right now, it’s important to remember that Freljord was the home of doing big things unreasonably quickly for a long time.

I doubt it would take much for Warding Stones or Catalyst of Aeons to jump back to center stage again.

The Stomp

Most regions have to deal with silly things like your opponent being allowed to block your creatures.

While they can certainly try, the dare I say overwhelming power of some of Freljords top ends threats can make those blocks feel like trying to stop a breaking dam by sticking your finger in the cracks.

The Sweep

Avalanche (LoR card)Blighted Ravine (LoR Card)

From Avalanche to Blighted Ravine with occasional showcases from Ice shard and Icequake Freljord is the place to be to deal with swarm-y nonsense.

That said be careful when leaning too hard on these.

The newest iteration of the swarm has started not caring about silly restrictions like “once a turn,” or “six wide board limit,” and can make things quite tricky.

The Burst

flash freeze jpgTroll Chant (LoR Card)

I don’t think a region is better at playing at Burst speed than our icy buddies here.

From the bevy of Freezes, to arguably the best combat trick in the game with Troll Chant, all the way down to Elixir of Iron and back up to Battle Fury, Freljord has this particular title on absolute lock.

Freljord Weaknesses

The Speed

Avarosan Trapper (LoR Card)

Everything Freljord does they tend to do slowly.

Whether it’s the simple speed of their actions with a total of two spells that work at Fast speed in the entire region, or actual delays courtesy of Avarosan Trapper and Blighted Ravine, speed is not the name of the game.

The Large Removal

While here in Freljord we excel at dealing with large amounts of small bodies, show us one with more than three health and we’re going to have problems.

Outside of avalanche-ing twice or finding a way to force it into combat we can’t really do much.

And don’t even get me started on five-plus health units that require answers.

I’m looking at you Inspiring Marshall.

Inspiring Marshal (LoR Card)

The Draw

This particular weakness is why you will often find Freljord paired up with another region that can create value for it.

trifarian assessor jpg

Whether it is the absolute K.O. power of the Shadow Isles combo or the brutal card draw engine that Trifarian Assessor provides we need to turn to other colors to cover this particular weakness or we will find ourselves quickly out of gas.

The Sneaky

Not to say that Freezes and Buff spells aren’t extremely powerful interaction tools, but there really isn’t sufficient variety in the region to represent multiple things.

You can either have it or not have it, but the thing you are representing to your opponent is basically always going to be the same.

Unless we include tricks and interaction from other regions hand reading against us ends up being both relatively simple and unfortunately binary.

Conclusion

Freljord is a place of howling winds, biting cold, buffs on buffs, and beefy boys.

They might be a little bit slow to get going but once the pace picks up the threat output they can get onto the board is almost unmatched.

Stay frosty, watch out for those Mega-Avalanches, and may all your Avarosan Trappers give you the Yeti on your first draw.

Strengths and Weaknesses Series Part 2: Ionia

Welcome back for part two of the Strengths and Weaknesses series.

I’m your host Jordan “WhatAmI” Abronson and today we’re going to be continuing with the region that always seems to be either completely broken or getting the short end of the stick.

Maybe if they learned to play fair they could hang out in the middle sometime but that’s just never been Ionia’s style.

Ionia Overview

Pink region re-pre-sent!

Ionia has been through some of the highest-highs and lowest-lows.

Of all the regions, this one seems to swing around the most.

From Karma or Lee Sin absolutely dominating entire metagames, to being told to sit in the corner and let Shen come out occasionally to help Fiora, they’ve seen it all.

Let’s look at the how and why of Ionian ingenuity.

Ionia Strengths

The “Mother May I”?

Deny (LoR card)Nopeify! (LoR Card)

From the beginning, Ionia has been the region of interaction.

With headliners like Deny and Will of Ionia now backed up by Nopeify! and Homecoming, you can bet that an Ionian player is going to be able to have something to say about pretty much anything their opponent wants to do.

The Sneaky

The Empyrean (LoR Card)

Sometimes you want to interact with your opponent and sometimes you just don’t.

From Shadow Assassin to Greenglade Duo all the way up the curve to Empyrean and Windfarer Hatchling, Ionia is brimming with ways to ignore your opponent’s futile efforts to force your creatures into fair fights.

The Combos

Karma level 1 (LoR card)zed jpg

Speaking of “fair” that’s the thing that Ionia is really just not into.

Headed up by Lee and Karma, but with Zed definitely not to be forgotten about, Ionia has spawned a plethora of “Oops you’re dead,” archetypes and I don’t see them stopping any time soon.

The Heals

spirit's refuge jpg

The region that brought you Health Potion quickly made it irrelevant as Eye of the Dragon, Tasty Fae Folk, Spirit’s Refuge, and even Kinkou Lifeblade stepped up to the plate to make sure your Nexus remains healthy while you deal with whatever nonsense your opponent has arrayed against you.

Ionia Weaknesses

The Efficiency

Ionia is good at a lot of things but matching people on the board just isn’t one of them.

When you look at the stat spread of pretty much all of your units across the board it pales in comparison to the straight numbers of basically every other region.

The Removal

While you can delay almost anything, actually answering creature-based threats is just not really Ionia’s wheelhouse.

Bounce it, stop its effect, survive whatever terror might be coming? Sure.

But stop it from hitting you in the face turn after turn? Might need to ask someone else.

The Stuns

concussive palm jpg

I’m sorry Yasuo, I love you buddy, but every time we try to make it work I end up being let down.

Between the inconsistency of drawing the card that turns the deck on and the general card disadvantage inherent in the system, the only stun card that really gets to see play is Concussive Palm, and even that one has been on the decline recently.

The Wide

While the occasional small unit does exist, Ionia has a real problem dealing with multiple threats.

Sometimes you can ignore one or two and try to end the game first, but if your opponent swarms the board, you are going to be left desperately hoping the other region in your deck can bail you out.

Conclusion

Ionia does quite a few things, but it’s never really willing to do any of them simply.

Want to ignore or counter everything your opponent is doing and assemble a three-ring circus to win the game?

Ionia’s got your back, there’ll just be six flaming hoops to jump through and a few riddles to solve on the way.

LoR Region Strengths and Weaknesses Series: Noxus

Hey everyone, I’m Jordan “WhatAmI,” Abronson, and today we’re going to be taking a bit of a departure from our regularly scheduled programming to look into some broader ideas than usual.

Instead of focusing on a specific deck, or even a specific archetype, today we’re going to talk regions in general.

We’ll go over where they shine, where they flop, and hope to leave everyone with a bit more of a solid grasp on where to look for certain types of power when beginning your deck building process.

Noxus Overview

Ah good old Noxus. Home of gladiatorial blood sport, an ever-expanding empire, and more destructive power than you can shake an ax at.

But what stats and strategies lie below the brutal exterior of the Noxian regime? Let’s take a look.

Noxus Strengths

The Burn

Decimate (LoR card)noxian fervor jpg

Any time Noxus enters the discussion the first thing on most people’s minds is their poor innocent nexus.

Decimate and Noxian Fervor are the headlines, but the theme continues with Legion Saboteur and Grenadier, Imperial Demolitionist, and even Crimson Disciple showing up to dish out a few direct points of damage.

When that’s not enough simply slam Captain Farron and watch your opponent’s defenses crumble.

If you want to straight-up murder a fool, Noxus is the only place to be.

The Aggro

Iron Ballista (LoR Card)

While they overlap thematically and are often seen together, aggro and burn are not the same.

Burn sends the damage directly to the nexus, while aggro looks to quickly take over the board.

House Spider, Legion Rearguard, Precious Pet, and Iron Ballista are good examples of this strength.

The Reputation

LeBlanc Level 1 (LoR reveal)

Sometimes you just want those huge swings.

While they might be a tad fragile, Noxus has got you covered and with some to spare on the damaging side of things.

Trifarian Gloryseeker, Thorn of the Rose, Kato, and of course Leblanc herself are ready to go to town.

Honorable mention to Trifarian Assessor playing backup duty and Crowd Favorite who can often rumble with the best of them.

The Removal

ravenous flock jpg

Noxus does removal a little differently than many other regions, but that doesn’t mean they’re bad at it.

Ravenous Flock, Noxian Guillotine, and Scorched Earth all need a bit of help, but they get the job done.

Death’s Hand and Culling sStrike do just fine on their own and Reckoning is an absolute blowout to all but the beefiest of boards.

Noxus Weaknesses

The Combat Tricks

Sharpened Resolve (LoR Card)

While they’re certainly there, comparing things like Sharpened Resolve and Might to the combat interactions of many of the other regions leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Transfusion and Weapon Hilt try their best, and Brother’s Bond has got your back, but this is just not usually the region to be messing around with your unit’s stats.

The Heals

Healing is for the weak, and Noxus, which tends to trade defense for offense, needs no weakness.

Therefore there aren’t any healing cards in this region. Moving right along.

The Beef

Trifarian Gloryseeker (LoR card)

While we do great in the power department, our creature’s health lines are often incredibly fragile.

Caring about the longevity of your summoned friends sounds a lot like sentimentality to the average Noxian and will not be tolerated.

Best to look elsewhere for survivability.

The Response

Scorched Earth (LoR Card)

Most of Noxus’s power happens at Slow speed or has a condition.

Even their highest quality removal spells in Ravenous Flock and Scorched Earth needs some setup to get it done.

While there are exceptions and a well-timed Culling Strike can turn games, Noxus does not tend to operate well on the stack.

They’re simple folk who like their steaks bloody and playing on their own turn.

Top 5 Cards from Shurima

Hey guys, NicMakesPlays here. I’ll be going over my list for the 5 best cards of Shurima the new region.

We’ll be focused on the non-champion cards, so Azir, Renekton, Taliyah, and Nasus will not be included.

At the end of the list, we’ll provide meta deck recommendations that feature these cards.

If there are any other cards you feel deserve to be in the top 5, let us know in the comments below!

1. Dunekeeper

Dunekeeper (LoR Card)

  • Dunekeeper
    • 1 mana 2|1 follower
    • Text: When I’m summoned, summon a Sand Soldier

Dunekeeper is the best follower to come out of Shurima.

It’s is a 2|1 that summons a 1|1 Sand Soldier that has Nexus Strike: Deal 1 to the enemy nexus.

Overall, it’s absolutely phenomenal defensively and offensively for 1 mana.

Offensively, you can push for 4 damage with one card. On offense Dunekeeper also allows you to go wide by summoning a Sand Soldier so you can have more attackers than your opponent has blockers.

On defense, you can use one action and one mana to summon two blockers, which is extremely powerful and can punish development by your opponent.

2. Rite of Negation

Rite of Negation (LoR Card)

  • Rite of Negation
    • 4 mana Fast spell
    • Text: Kill an ally or destroy one of your mana gems to stop all enemy Fast spells, Slow spells, and Skills

Rite of Negation is one of the strongest cards of Shurima because it gives them access to spell and skill negation.

As we know, Deny is in 90% of Ionia decks making it the most inclusive card in all of Runeterra.

Rite of Negation is similar to Deny but negates all enemy spells and skill on the stack for the trade-off of having to destroy an ally or destroy a mana gem.

Shurima having access to a card this powerful allows them to keep up the pressure and go for game with things like Renekton or Nasus.

3. Exhaust
Exhaust (LoR Card)

  • Exhaust
    • 1 mana Focus spell
    • Text: Give an enemy -2|-0 and Vulnerable this round

Exhaust is one of the best ways for Shurima to remove units.

This is a cheap focus speed card that allows you to grant an enemy unit so you can remove it through combat.

Exhaust also buffs Renekton as well as working well with Sivir’s Quick Attack for a free kill.

It allows for cheap removal which is just what Shurima needs to deal with threats such as Twisted Fate and Aphelios.

4. Shaped Stone

Shaped Stone (LoR Card)

  • Shaped Stone
    • 1 mana Burst spell
    • Give an ally +1|+1 this round. If you’ve summoned a landmark this game, give it +3|+1 instead

Shaped Stone is extremely mana efficient for the buffs it gives.

Shaped Stone gives +1|+1 to an ally for a round, but if you’ve played a landmark this game it gives +3|+1.

Is it easy to play a landmark in all Shurima decks since Mono Shurima has the Sun Disc, Taliyah has Preservarium and Renekton/Sivir Leblanc have Rock Hopper, and Azir has Emperor’s Dias.

Giving a unit +3|1 can push for huge damage, help level Sivir and Renekton as well as allow Sand Soldiers to get good trades in combat.

Giving +3|+1 can also help give the extra health to live through Mystic Shot to protect units as well as go for game.

5. Ruin Runner

Ruin Runner (LoR reveal)

  • Ruin Runner
    • 5 mana 6|4 follower, Overwhelm, Spellshield

Ruin Runner is one of the strongest followers in Shurima due to its high stats and keywords Overwhelm and Spellshield.

Its Overwhelm is amazing in Renekton Sejuani decks since they needed a 5 cost unit that could push huge damage with Overwhelm.

This card is also good in Sivir Leblanc since it helps enable Reputation and the Spellshield can protect it while you go for Bloody Business and Whirling Death.

Spellshield goes without saying is one of the strongest keywords in all of Runeterra.

In unison with Overwhelm, Spellshield allows you to push for huge damage that your opponent’s spells can’t deal with.

Decklists that the Top 5 are included in

As we mentioned earlier, here are two decklists that the Top 5 Shurima cards are included in!

Lucian Azir

NicMakesPlays Azir Lucian (LoR Deck)

5 Lissandra Deck Recommendations (Empires of the Ascended)

Our newest Freljordian addition to the metagame has caused an absolute flurry of action.

Welcome, everybody, I’m Jordan “WhatAmI” Abronson and today I’m going to be breaking down the many different homes for our new Icy Overlord.

The five decks I’ll be discussing will range from competitive to memey so whether you’re a competitive player or just want to have fun, you should find something worth trying out.

First up is the top of the heap.

Love it or hate it, it is looking like Matron-Watcher is here to stay.

Spectrak Matron (LoR Card)Watcher (LoR Card)

They’ve got a simple, powerful, hard-to-stop game plan that is easy to execute while hiding behind an absolute shield wall of control tools for the turns it takes to get the job done.

  1. Play a Trundle.
  2. Have Lissandra in play going in to turn eight.
  3. Play Ice Pillar, regain your mana, Fading Memories, Ice Pillar, Regain your mana, Lissandra level’s up. Now play Spectral Matron targeting the Watcher Lissandra just gave you.

Not only do you have a Watcher in play ready to obliterate your opponent’s deck, but the Matron and the Watcher clone just put your count of 8+ cost units played up to four.

So, in case they can answer the first one you’ve got a second 0 cost Watcher on standby ready to get in some deck-obliterating action of its own.

That might sound like an awful lot of combo pieces to have to put together, and it is.

Babbling Bjerg (LoR Card)Entreat (LoR Card)

But between all the stalls your deck has access to, tutors like Entreat and Bjerg, and the fact that you have to wait until at least turn eight anyway, it’s surprisingly consistent and mind and deck obliteratingly powerful.

2. Trundle Ledros Lissandra Control (TLLC)

This one might look quite similar but the game plan plays out completely differently.

This version, while still in Shadow Isles, is significantly less focused on generating a Watcher to win with.

Sure, you might occasionally get one off a Pillar and a Ledros, and even Revitalizing Roar it into play, but that’s not where most of your victories will come from.

Ice Pillar (LoR Card after 1.14 nerf)

Here we have much more of a classic checkmate-control style deck.

We move much more slowly, often not killing until turns ten-twelve, but we’re a lot safer getting there.

Imagine trying to burn out your opponent through the ridiculous amount of early healing in this deck only to have them play Revitalizing Roar and heal for another nine.

Revitalizing Roar (LoR card)

Against more aggressive lists you don’t even need to wait until Enlightened is functional.

Sometimes you just stall out the board and pay seven mana to gain nine life, closing out the game.

While we will usually need Ledros to close a game, we do run five of him if you count the Bjergs, and sometimes something as simple as a few Trundle smacks backed up by an Atrocity will get the job done just fine.

3. Frozen Timelines

Straying further from the norm, anyone who has dropped by my stream the last week or so may have seen me testing out and refining this lovely abomination.

Here again, Lissandra is not our main focus, but she puts up an impressive showing of the supporting cast.

The base combo of this deck is Pillar plus Timelines plus Iterative Improvement, which allows us to drop two nasty eight drops into play at once and even get the summon effect off of the second one.

Concurrent Timelines (LoR Card)

If we don’t have Timelines active then we can also simply Iterative our Pillar repeatedly to turbo-level our Lissandra and get in some good old-fashioned Watcher beat downs.

iterative improvement (LoR Card)

We top out at Corina who will deliver on Average 2.5 points of damage across our opponent’s whole board and face, or a game wrecking 4|6 if we can flip her into a Dreadway with Timelines.

While I don’t think this one quite hits the competitive level of the other two, yet, it is an absolute blast to play.

I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys doing explosive flashy tricks that have quite reasonable chances of winning them the game.

4. Burning Snow

For the last couple of iterations on this theme, I thought we would have the dance partners switch it up a bit.

We get that Lissandra and Trundle are the best of buds, but let’s look at what happens when we pair her with someone just a little bit less troll-y.

The answer is it goes surprisingly well. This variation ends up feeling a lot better in some of the midrange variants like Shurima-Overwhelm or Sivir-Demacia that the other lists struggle with.

Flock and Scorched Earth are godsends when it comes to dealing with the beefier units out there.

On top of that without all the combo tools, we have room for inclusions like Draklorn Inquisitor and Frozen Thrall, moving us more into a solidly powerful midrange deck that wants to close out the game around turn eight or nine.

Draklorn Inquisitor (LoR Card)

Between our solid suite of control spells, the traditional Leviathan endgame, and the looming threat of 8|8 Overwhelm trolls sometimes showing up as early as turn six, we’ve got some serious threats to apply.

Not to mention that Swain himself will often come down leveled up on turn five with no more help needed than a single Blighted Ravine.

Last and arguably memeiest, but inarguably awesome, is the Lissandra Taliyah deck.

This deck is packed to the gills with absolute nonsense.

While we’ve still got some of the same solid control tools that follow Lissandra around like a pack of pet hounds, we are definitely doing some weird stuff alongside them.

Yep, you saw that right, that’s three Promising Futures.

Promising Future (LoR reveal)

And those Rites of Calling?

Those aren’t there to fetch our champions, oh no, that would be too simple.

Those are there to kill our champions off to make board space for the absolute onslaught of 8|8 overwhelm trolls this deck wants to produce in a single turn.

Rite of Calling (LoR reveal)

Lissandra can do some cool things if your opponent manages to survive, sure.

But usually, if we make between two and four 8|8 Overwhelms that get to open attack the turn they enter play we have already won the game.

However, in those spots where that’s somehow not quite enough, we can simply drop a Lissandra down the turn after and already be ready and raring to go with a fully tricked-out Watcher.

Inconsistent and arguably a bit silly? Oh yeah.

But an absolute blast to combo off with? Bet your bottom dollar.

Conclusion

There are a whole bunch of different ways to play this cool new champion that Shurima has dropped into Freljord’s lap.

From top tier to meme tier and everything in between we’ve got all the sweet Lissandra action you’re looking for.

And hey, if you’re getting a little tired of watching the Ice Queen dominating the meta game, stay tuned folks.

Later this week I will be coming out with a counter-deck-guide specifically tuned for how to crush the icy menace.

Until then, best of luck, and keep your winter clothes close at hand.
